To make vehicles safer, Toyota began installing airbag EDR in model year 2001 and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has required automakers which have EDRs in their vehicles with a readout tool that must be made commercially available by September 1, 2012, for the start of model year 2013.
